If you aren't already lean, you gotta focus on losing fat before working on muscle gain. (Yes... this applies to both men and women, of all ages, regardless of your current goal)
So here are a few of the most important reasons: Reason #1: Optimized insulin sensitivity. Getting lean and reducing your body fat increases your insulin sensitivity. Increased insulin sensitivity means that your body can make better use of carbohydrates. Basically, when you're fat, your body has trouble digesting carbs and absorbing nutrients, and you gain weight. But when you're lean, your body can much more efficiently shuttle those nutrients to the muscle, helping them to grow without the excess fat gain. In a nutshell: Getting lean causes your body to become more efficient at building muscle. It also means you can eat more carbs (i.e. all your favourite foods) without gaining fat. Reason #2: You'll look better sooner. I remember David Kingsbury (Hugh Jackman's personal trainer) telling that the most important factor in getting stars ready for the big screen was getting them lean. Muscle gain was just a bonus. That's because people look better when they're lean. They have visible abs. Muscles are more defined. And, in a trick of the eye, they also look bigger and stronger. Getting lean isn't just a vanity thing either... The sooner you get lean, the sooner you will experience a huge boost in confidence and motivation. Reason #3: You only have to do it once. Say that you're chubby and you start trying to build muscle before getting lean. What will happen is that you'll gain around 2lbs of fat for every pound of muscle. Then, when you decide to 'cut' (go on a diet) to get rid of the fat, you'll lose most of the muscle you gained. So you'll just have to do it all over again (this is the cycle of 'bulking and cutting'). But if you get lean first, it's easy to stay lean while building muscle (see reason #1). It's also just way healthier. When you're lean you're at a much lower risk of a bunch of nasty diseases like diabetes, thyroid stuff, and several kinds of cancer. Anyway... One of the best ways to get lean (and improve insulin sensitivity) is with the type of workouts we do in Lamp fitness. These workouts burn up to 35% more fat than cardio, and also create an 'afterburn' that lasts up to 38 hours afterwards. (the workouts will also help you build - or at least retain - muscle, but the focus is fat loss) To learn more about how it works, head over here: www.lampfitness.com
